The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini and HTC One Mini are mini marvels, combining fairly impressive specs with a small screen and a mid range price. If you want a good but small phone then they're both great options, but which is the best?
Sony Xperia Z1 Mini vs HTC One Mini - Build quality
Both the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini and the HTC One Mini are basically just shrunk down versions of their namesakes. In the Xperia Z1 Mini's case that means it's got a glass back and a metal frame, while the HTC One Mini has an aluminium back and aluminium bezels above and below the screen on the front.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini has dimensions of 127 x 65 x 9.4mm and weighs roughly 140g, while the HTC One Mini is 132 x 63.2 x 9.3mm and weighs 122g, so in other words the HTC One Mini is longer, thinner, lighter and ever so slimmer than the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini, but in practice you're not likely to notice much difference.
Both look and feel high quality, the HTC One Mini probably most of all, but as the Xperia Z1 Mini is also water and dust resistant it matches it overall.
Sony Xperia Z1 Mini vs HTC One Mini - Display
Both the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini and the HTC One Mini have 4.3 inch 1280 x 720 screens. That makes them 720p rather than 1080p, but given the relatively small sizes of the screens that's plenty enough. Being the same size and resolution there's little to choose between the two.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini has a surprisingly powerful 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, which on paper makes it as powerful as the Sony Xperia Z1.
The HTC One Mini fares rather less well in the power stakes, with a 1.4 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM. It's not exactly lacking for power but it's well and truly dwarfed by the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini.
Both phones run Android 4.2.2 Jellybean.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini fares remarkably well in the camera stakes too, with the same 20.7 megapixel camera and Exmor RS sensor as the Sony Xperia Z1, along with a 2.2 megapixel front facing camera and the ability to shoot 1080p video.
The HTC One Mini also has the same camera as its big brother, but at just 4 megapixels it's rather less impressive. It does use Ultrapixels to allow more light in, but it still can't compete with the camera on the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini. It also has a 1.6 megapixel front facing camera and can shoot 1080p video at 30fps.
Sony Xperia Z1 Mini vs HTC One Mini - Battery life, memory and connectivity
The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini has a 2300 mAh battery while the HTC One Mini has an 1800 mAh battery. No stats have yet been released for Sony's battery but while it's bigger it's also got a much more powerful phone to keep alive, so we'll call it a draw for now.
Both phones have 16GB of built in storage, but while the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini also has a micro SD card slot the HTC One Mini doesn't.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini supports Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, while the HTC One Mini has the same set of connectivity options minus NFC.
Sony Xperia Z1 Mini vs HTC One Mini - Conclusion
While both the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini and the HTC One Mini are great phones one is quite clearly better than the other and that's the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini.
Not only is it far more powerful than the HTC One Mini but it also has a much better camera, a micro SD card slot and NFC support, while it matches the HTC One Mini for everything else. Its screen and build quality are both around as good and it has the same amount of built in storage.
No price has yet been given for the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini and considering how powerful it is it's likely that it will be more expensive than the HTC One Mini (which goes for around £340 SIM free), in which case the choice between the two may be tougher, but based purely on the devices themselves it's a far better handset.
The other thing to consider is that the HTC One Mini is already available to buy in the UK, but the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini isn't expected to go on sale until January 14th.
