With a screen that measures 5 inches, Sony's flagship Xperia Z1 really skirts the line between phone and 'phablet.' For anyone that can't quite wrap their hands around it, Sony just introduced a new phone, the Xperia Z1F, at a DoCoMo event in Japan. The Xperia Z1F is essentially just an Xperia Z1, shrunken down to a more pocketable size.
The only major difference between the Xperia Z1F and the Xperia Z1 is screen size. The Z1F trades the Z1's 5-inch, 1080p display for a 4.3-inch, 720p version. That makes the Xperia Z1F slightly less dense, but it still manages to pack in 341 pixels per inch, which should keep the screen looking sharp. Aside from that, the only other difference here is that, in addition to black and white, the Xperia Z1F will also be available in pink or yellow.
Otherwise, specs remain virtually identical to the Xperia Z1. The Z1F features a quad-core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 20.1-megapixel G lens camera. The phone will come running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) with Sony's skin installed on top of it.
I for one am a fan of the slightly smaller form factor, and like that Sony is giving customers a choice. The only problem is that the Xperia Z1F isn't due to arrive until December, and that's in Japan. It isn't yet clear if Sony plans to launch the device worldwide.
