Nokia has lodged a patent for the design, which is like a bangle made up of six touchscreens with each screen able to show a different feature or application.
Rather than constantly tapping and touching your screen to shift through applications, you rotate the band on your wrist.
If you want to expand some information, such as see the full text of an email rather than just the subject line, you can swipe the message down across to the next screen and around your wrist.
So, you could have a time display on one panel, with other screens showing things such as your calendar, the weather, your email, and text messages.
The smartwatch prototype, uncovered by the Endgadget tech site, has one bag challenge: battery life.
Reactions online so far to the radical design have ranged from surprise to bemusement.
One of the criticisms of the Galaxy Gear, Samsung's smartwatch, is that it needs charging each day. With six-times as many panels to power, the Nokia prototype would have either a very short battery life or need a battery for each panel, adding to the weight.
Nokia has a history of making out-there prototypes, dating back to its heyday of the nineties.
Given Microsoft is set to buy Nokia, there are some significant hurdles to face if the smart bangle, known as the Nokia Facet, is going to go from prototype to product.
