Photos Tip 41

Just days before the expected launch of Nokia's 41-megapixel Windows Phone, new photos posted online suggest that the gadget will be named the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Over the weekend, Microsoft Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore posted on Flickr a series of sample images from different Lumia Windows Phones — two of which were shot with a phone tagged as the 'Lumia 1020.'

The photos were posted on June 29, just after Belfiore finished running what he said was his third marathon in three countries in six months. The first — Belfiore lounging in a boat on his way to a spa after the race (below) — has a resolution of 2,947-by-1,658, or about 5 megapixels; the second — featuring Belfiore proudly posing with his marathon medal (above) — is listed at a resolution of 2,352-by-1,568 (3.7 megapixels).

An eagle-eyed Verge reader initially spotted the Nokia Lumia 1020 name, and posted Belfiore's photo to a Verge forum, noting that the image was exported by Adobe Lightroom, and not straight from the camera.

Nokia debuted its 41-megapixel camera at the 2012 Mobile World Congress trade show as part of the Symbian-powered PureView 808. The system takes incredibly high-resolution pictures, and is likely the same technology implanted into the newest Lumia device, which Nokia is expected to debut at a Thursday event.

On the PureView 808, the 41-megapixel camera saves images at much more manageable 3-, 5-, or 8-megapixel resolutions so as not to eat up all that available online storage. Given that Belfiore's Nokia 1020 photos were saved at lower resolutions, it appears that the new phone will have that capability, too.

Nokia will likely launch the Lumia 1020, codenamed EOS, on Thursday, at a press event that will be webcast worldwide. The event starts at 11 a.m. Eastern, and PCMag will be there, so stay tuned for all the details.

Rumors about the powerful camera emerged in February, when The Guardian reported that the company would bring its groundbreaking PureView sensor to the Lumia lineup.
