Since March, Sony has made its Xperia Transfer tool available for consumers who wish to move from the iPhone to a Sony Xperia and simplify the process of transferring their data. The new Xperia Transfer 3.0 program adds options for Android and BlackBerry devices, as well as new types of data that can be transferred.
Xperia Transfer can transfer a user's personal contacts, photos and videos, music, text messages, calendar appointments, and even browser bookmarks from one phone to the other. That's been the biggest appeal of the PC and Mac OS companion tool since its launch last spring. While Android users benefit from backing up that information to Google accounts and having it reappear when loading a new phone, Apple iPhone and BlackBerry owners do not have as easy a time. Xperia Transfer 3.0 makes it possible to connect the old phone to have data backed up to a computer, and then connect the new Sony Xperia device to have all the old files applied to the new phone.
Sony has increased migration options to offer a new Android app that provides the same functions, and released a new App matching tool to make it easier to reload apps on the device. The Android app is available in Google Play and works in conjunction with the PC companion by prepping locally-stored data - messages, photos, music, etc. - that will be transferred later. Compatibility is shaky, so don't be surprised if it takes a few attempts to get the PC Companion app and the old phone to work properly. There may be a case where it's easier to just transfer files the old-fashion way.
As for the App Matching service, Xperia Transfer now analyzes a list of installed applications on an old device and then creates a list of apps that are also available in Google Play. If Twitter for iPhone is installed, it represents Twitter for Android, and so on. In the event that an iOS or BlackBerry app is unavailable, the companion recommends a suitable 'equivalent' of the app.
Xperia Transfer works with Android 2.1 or later, iOS 4.0 or later, and BlackBerry OS 4.0-7.1. A computer running at least Mac OS 10.6 or Windows XP is required to use the tool.
