After months of delays, BlackBerry Ltd.'s BlackBerry Messenger app will finally be available to download today for some users of Apple Inc. iPhones and devices running Google Inc.'s Android operating system - but only if you're at the top of the waiting list.
In a post on the Waterloo, Ont. smartphone manufacturer's blog, executive vice president of BBM Andrew Bocking that he is 'thrilled' to 'officially resume' the company's rollout of the company's flagship instant messaging application worldwide.
The roughly six million users who pre-registered to be notified of the BBM roll out ahead of time will be granted immediate access. The company has pledged to bring others on board 'as fast as possible.'
Officially announced in May, BBM for Android and iPhone was originally slated for release this past summer, but was pushed back to the weekend of September 21. However, the rollout was suspended that Saturday after an unreleased version of the company's Android app caused unspecified issues, marring the company's plans.
'This unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day,' the company wrote at the time, shortly after disabling the rogue Android app.
In an open letter published in more than 30 daily newspapers in nine countries last Tuesday, BlackBerry assured users it could continue to count on the company. It re-affirmed its commitment to launching BBM for other devices soon, but did not provide a timeline.
iPhone users, however, were able to continue using the unreleased app. More than one million people have installed the iPhone app on their iPhones since last month, according to BlackBerry. That includes those who downloaded the app before it was removed from the App Store, and those who acquired it through unofficial means using a jailbroken device.
