Preview: HTC One Max

The HTC One is our favourite Android phone of the moment - in fact of all time, now that we think about it. It already has a smaller sibling in the form of the HTC One Mini, and it's set to get a big brother very soon in the form of the HTC One Max.

So what can you expect from this super-sized smartphone? Read on and we'll fill you in on the latest news, rumours and info on what could be the swankiest phablet of them all.

The screen will be hugeEven judging by phablet standards, the HTC One Max looks set for a bumper display: all rumours suggest a 5.9in 1920 x 1080 screen. That's larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note II's, which musters a mere 5.5 inches, or the Galaxy Note 3's which spans to 5.7in. There's no word on what specific technology the display will use, but we'd put our money on it being Super LCD, just like the 'vanilla' One.

It shares its design DNA with the one Leaked photos of the HTC One Max have shown that it will look, essentially, like a stretched-out HTC One. And that's certainly no bad thing, what with the One boasting some of the finest build quality we've ever seen on a smartphone. So you can expect an aluminium unibody with speaker grilles placed on the front, and possibly a curved back to aid ergonomics - although the One Max presumably won't feel quite as comfy in your hand as the much smaller One.

UPDATE: More leaked photos of the HTC One Max have appeared on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo (via The Verge), showing the 5.9in HTC phablet next to the 5.7in Samsung Galaxy Note 3. A teardown photo also reveals the One Max's SIM card slot and a closer look at that rumoured fingerprint sensor.

It may have a fingerprint scanner A recent ' leaked shot ' of the HTC One Max alongside the One showed that the former apparently has a blank square on its backside, just underneath the camera lens. Some have suggested that this could be a fingerprint scanner, but we're not 100% convinced: firstly, it's ugly and ruins the sleek design which is the One range's trademark; secondly, there's no mention of it on the most convincing leaked spec sheet around. Although it has to be said - the iPhone 5S has shown that such a thing could be useful, and there's a lot more a fingerprint reader could do besides unlocking and making purchases.

There is, of course, the possibility that it could be reserved for selected markets such as China. We'll see.

Quad-core power While specifications are yet to be confirmed by HTC, a leaked spec sheet claims the One Max will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor running at a brisk 2.3GHz, backed up with 2GB of RAM.

UPDATE: Benchmark results have reportedly revealed that the One Max will feature a lower-spec Snapdragon 600 processor rather than the Snapdragon 800 seen in a leaked spec sheet.

Interestingly there's nothing on the sheet about storage space, except a reference to a microSD card slot. Expect built-in storage to be in line with the regular HTC One, which comes in 32GB and 64GB capacities.

Also on the spec sheet is mention of an UltraPixel camera (no word on megapixel count, but it's likely to be the same 4MP model found on the One), which should make the One Max handy for low light photography, as well as a 2.1MP front-facing camera.

There will reportedly be a 4G LTE-equipped model.

The latest version of Android Talk of the HTC One Max coming with Android 5 doesn't wash, but there is some good news: it seems set to offer Android Jelly Bean 4.3, the latest version of Google's OS, straight out of the box. That means the latest Android features, including restricted profiles and better graphical effects for gaming. It'll also have HTC's Sense 5.5 software laid over the top.

It'll be launching this year The HTC One Max was strongly tipped to launch at the IFA technology expo in Berlin this September, but that didn't happen. We'd anticipate that HTC won't want the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to get too much of a foothold before its own launch, however, so we'd anticipate a launch this autumn. Stay tuned.
